Overview

Discover Your Strengths

You already have skills, strengths, and experiences that matter.

In this workshop, you will learn how to recognize what you are good at and how to talk about it when applying for jobs. You do not need formal work experience to have valuable skills. Your experiences at school, at home, in your community, through volunteering or caregiving, in your hobbies, or in programs can all help demonstrate what you bring to a workplace.

This workshop is built on respect, choice, and partnership. You are the expert on your own life. We will start with your strengths, interests, goals, and experiences. Disability will be discussed as part of human diversity, not as something that makes you less capable.

We will also explore how barriers in workplaces, systems, and environments can affect job seekers, as well as how supports, accommodations, and inclusive practices can help.

What You’ll Learn

By the end of this session, you will be able to:

  • Identify your personal strengths, interests, and skills.
  • Recognize the value of experiences that may not come from paid work, such as school projects, volunteering, caregiving, hobbies, community involvement, training, or life experience.
  • Understand transferable skills and how they can be used in many different jobs.
  • Connect your strengths and experiences to the types of jobs you may want.
  • Describe your strengths to an employer in a resume, cover letter, interview, or conversation.
  • Build confidence in talking about what you can do and what support helps you succeed.

Who Should Attend

This session is designed for youth job seekers ages 15 to 30. It may also be helpful for anyone looking for their first job or anyone who would like support identifying and communicating their strengths to an employer.
